AFL or Australian Rules Football as you would expect is one of Australia's biggest pastimes and this love of the sport transfers over into the betting world with millions of dollars bet each year by punters on various markets.
The AFL consists of eighteen teams who battle it out each year in a bid to win the coveted 'flag', starting in March the season runs through twenty three rounds of intense action before the top eight teams face off against each other in the finals series with the last two teams standing going on to contest The Grand Final.
There is an unofficial award to the team that tops the ladder at the end of the regular season which is given the minor premiers tag.
AFL for many years was a sport most commonly associated with Victoria but as the years have progressed the rest of the Australian states have come into the sport due to it's increased popularity nation wide and apart from Tasmania all states now have teams competing in the AFL.
AFL is played over four twenty minute quarters (due to time on rules quarters often run for 27-30 minutes) and the rules are simple, one point for a behind and six points for a goal. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins the match.
Below is a list of the current AFL teams who compete each season, their home ground and which state they represent:
Due to the nature of AFL and the way the game is played with high scoring the norm draws are very seldom seen so usually a punter will place a bet on either team to win although when a draw does pop up from time to time you get some very juicy odds if you have had a bet on that outcome.
The online bookmakers will offer the inferior team a virtual head start in line with their current form and the line could be anywhere a little as 1-6 points all the way up to 60-80.
Example - Essendon are priced at 1.3 to beat the Swans in the head to head market but once the handicap is formed lets say the Swans gain 24.5 points then the line betting would be 1.9 the pair.
If the Swans either won the match or lost by no more than 25 points then it is the Swans that is deemed the winner in the market.
You can pick set margins that the betting site has priced up which usually consists of band ranges or you can go for the exact margin a team will win by.
Example - Essendon 1-16, this means that if Essendon win the match by anywhere between 1 to 16 points then your bet is a winner.
Alternatively the exact margin would be if you placed a bet on Essendon to win by 31 points then they would have to win by that margin and that margin alone
The pricing within the market is determined by previous form throughout the year.
Example - Player A has 35 disposals during the match while players B,C,D,E and F can only manage 22,31, 26, 17 and 33 respectively so player A wins the match up and the bet.
Example - Player A scores 5 goals and the nearest rival only manages 3 goals then player A is the winner OR player A and B score 4 goals each then they are both deemed the winner and the odds of the selections are halved.
If three players score the same amount then the odds are a third of the original and so on.
Example - Hawthorne to be leading at half time and at full time OR the Swans to be leading at half time and Hawthorne to win at full time.
It is a good option to inflate your odds on any given match.
The player with the most votes at the end of the season is deemed the winner.
