Middlesbrough Football Club is a professional team based in North Yorkshire that participates in the second tier of football in England (the Championship). Their home arena is Riverside Stadium on the banks of the Tees and their next match is with Bishop Auckland FC on the 14th of July.
History
Middlesbrough FC was born out of Middlesbrough Cricket Club in 1876 when the players decided to jump sides as Britain was gripped in football fever. Their inception point was the gymnasium near Albert Park Hall. Their first match was at the Archery Ground. With turnover regularly crossing 200 they were evicted from there and had to relocate to Brockton Hill, and then Linthorpe Road Ground. Though they resided here long, amenities were lacking.1889 saw a fierce debate on the issue of competing as professionals. A divide led to the fragmentation of one group who went on to become pro with the name Middlesbrough Ironopolis. After the split, a shift of locale led Middlesbrough to Ayresome Park in 1903.
They kicked off with black and red striped shirts. The change in jersey reflected the shift. White shirt and blue shorts of Linthorpe gave way to red overalls with a white stripe in the jersey at Ayresome. The stripe has remained quite the same despite minor alterations like crest panels and shoulder yokes.
This unique club has seen disputes over its name spelling as well. There used to be two ‘o’s as in ‘Middlesbrough’. Unfortunately, the clerk misspelt it. Their nickname saw a schism following the events of 1889 with Middlesbrough being called The Scabs and Ironopolis The Nops by the faithful fans.

Boro Partners with GAMSTOP
GAMSTOP provides free and independent service to players who wish to restrict themselves from online gambling and have announced a partnership with the prestigious Boro Club. With the condition of registering with GAMSTOP to obtain a Gambling Commission license, the entire British market has come under their protective purview for the first time.Their secure, simple, one-stop solution is now available to anyone on gambling websites. Participants can abstain from all online gambling for six months (the minimum), a year, or five years. The program is such that the ban cannot be lifted at any point. Without contacting GAMSTOP the registration will be increased to 7 years and you should still visit the CasinoGap website - https://casinogap.org/non-gamstop-bookmakers/ to pick non GamStop bookmakers.
Boro stood with the Responsible Gambling Week from the beginning and their now united path is a praiseworthy movement toward safer gambling. Awareness will be disseminated through selected match days and various social media platforms. With participation crossing 1,30,000 GAMSTOP hopes to extend its services to anyone requiring it.
The company is aligning with gambling charities as well. People are assisted by accessing the website or calling the helpline. They get referred to a specialist for further support if GAMSTOP sees fit.
Neil Banbury, UK GM of 32Red commented, owing to the wide adult reach of football, this partnership has the potential for inculcating healthy gambling habits and thus is necessary for the future. GAMSTOP’s Chief Executive Fiona Palmer highlighted the benefits of the partnership with MFC.
- Expand scope to the people who are vulnerable and can benefit from GAMSTOP’s self-exclusion tool. This is especially due to the pandemic and football advertisement that compulsive gambling can develop in periods of prolonged confinement.
- Disseminating awareness of responsible gambling to the population and protecting the customers.
- Upgrading GAMSTOP into a more trustworthy, safe, and independent service

Concluding Thoughts
The first emblem of a blue lion was welcomed in 1911 representing the priory founded by Brus of Skelton where the club is located. The three ships symbolized local industry, which got abandoned in later emblems. The lion remained with them through years of liquidation, Premier League, large debts, and under the label of “Middlesbrough Football and Athletics Company”.
