While the hosting nation enters the tournament as favourites, they will face stiff competition from defending champions Italy, three-time champions Spain, and the 2016 edition winners Portugal.

France is also a strong contender and will be looking for a record-equalling third title, while Gareth Southgate’s England would also be looking forward to bagging the ultimate prize after losing in the 2021 UEFA Euros final to Italy.

Here’s a look at the favourites to win the Golden Boot Award, given to the top goal-scorer at the UEFA Euro 2024:

#5 Romelu Lukaku (Belgium)

Romelu Lukaku, Belgium’s all-time leading goal-scorer, didn’t have a memorable time in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and was heavily criticized after missing four chances in the game against Croatia.

But, Lukaku was in sensational goal-scoring touch last year with 15 goals in nine matches for the Red Devils, clearly relishing his time under Domenico Tedesco. For Roma, the Belgian striker scored 21 goals and assisted 4 goals for Jose Mourinho’s men, helping them qualify for the semi-final of the 2023-24 UEFA Europa League season.

The former Manchester United striker scored four goals in the previous edition of the Euros, only one behind the eventual Golden Boot winner Cristiano Ronaldo.

#4 Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the biggest names in sporting history. At 39, he is still scoring goals at regular intervals for his club Al Nassr. The former Real Madrid forward scored 35 goals in 31 matches for the Saudi-based club in the 2023-24 Saudi Pro League season.

Ronaldo won the Golden Boot in the last edition with five goals, including a memorable brace in a 2-2 draw against France. With the Czech Republic, Turkey, and Georgia slated to be Ronaldo’s opponents in the group stage, it is likely that the former Real Madrid star will take an early lead in the Golden Boot race.

#3 Niclas Fullkrug (Germany)

Germany is one of the favourites to win the tournament. Under Julian Nagelsmann, the team has a fantastic attacking system and plenty of creative midfielders in the squad.

Niclas Fullkrug is going to lead the frontline for them in this edition and is expected to receive plenty of great opportunities as the tournament progresses. It won’t come as a surprise if the 31-year-old takes the crown for the best goal-scorer, especially with the home crowd getting behind Die Mannschaft in several German cities over the next four weeks.

He had a good outing with Borussia Dortmund last season, scoring 16 goals and assisting 10 more across competitions. He scored seven goals in nine matches for Germany in 2023 and has two goals already in four appearances this year.

#2 Harry Kane (England)

Harry Kane’s first season with Bayern Munich didn’t turn out to be memorable despite scoring plenty of goals throughout the campaign. The Bavarian giants ended the season without a trophy, but individually, it was a flawless season for the Englishman, who scored a whopping 36 goals in 32 matches to win the European Golden Shoe for the 2023-24 season.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winner has been in great goal-scoring form since the beginning of 2023, scoring 10 goals in 11 matches for the Three Lions. Supported by the likes of Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, and Bukayo Saka, Kane would not be starved of service throughout the tournament.

#1 Kylian Mbappe (France)

There is no player in the footballing world right now who hogs as much limelight as Kylian Mbappe. Recently, the star forward made a sensational move to Real Madrid and the former PSG star will have the support of Antoine Griezmann, Kingsley Coman, and former club teammate Ousamane Dembele at the tournament.

With 47 goals for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Winners, Mbappe is already the third-highest goal-scorer for his country, and the world awaits his exploits in Germany. Mbappe won the Golden Boot in the sensational 2022 FIFA World Cup where he also became the second player ever to score a hat-trick in the final.

The 25-year-old is entering the supposed prime period of his career, and Les Blues would be hoping that the newest entrant on the Galacticos list powers them to a record-equalling third continental title at the Olympistadion on 14th July.
